FAQ: Here you find the answers to the most asked questions related to your trip to Sumatra / Bukit Lawang:
#1: How can I pay for the trekking, the accomodation, the transport or the food?
We know that most of the people are looking for payment options as easy as possible. That´s why we offer different payment options:
- The trekking, the accomodation and the transport you can pay either by credit card (Mastercard, Visa) or cash. It´s also possible to pay in Euro. You can decide to split and pay one part by cash and the other by credit card as well.
- Please notice that we have to charge you 3% for credit card payment and also soem extra fee for paying in Euro (depending on the current exchange rate). Bukit Lawang is a small village and not a big city like Medan or others. We have to pay for credit card payment or money changing.
- For the food in the café / bakery or in other restaurants you should bring a reasonable amount of cash money to Bukit Lawang. Most of the local places do not accept credit card payment.
#2: Do I need to bring cash money? Are there any possibilities to get cash money in Bukit Lawang?
It is actually a good idea to bring at least some cash money to Bukit Lawang to be able to pay the local restaurants, to buy things in a kiosk, supermarket or the local market for your everyday needs. Most of the local shops do not accept credit cards. The amount depends on how long you are planning to stay in and around Bukit Lawang. Reasonable should be an amount of 10 -15 Euro ( 170.000 – 250.000 IDR) per day for one person, if you plan to explore the local area and for eating outside in the restaurants.
Just a hint in case you like to enjoy a nice cold beer in the evening: Beer is quite expensive in Sumatra. You have to calculate around 2 Euro (35.000 IDR) for one small beer (Bintang) and 4 Euro (70.000 IDR) for a big one.
We recommend to use the ATM (Mandiri bank or BNI / BRI) at the airport. You find them in the arrival hall, just straight ahead when you passed the customs. The amount you can get out of the ATM may vary but is normally around 1.250.000 IDR and 2.500.000 IDR (ca 70 – 145 Euro). The nearest local ATM is in Bohorok, around 20 minutes drive from Bukit Lawang.
